The Five Best Tools for On-Site SEO
On-site SEO is essentially measuring and trying to improve the performance of your website. You’re working “on” the website.
Here is my current tool stack as it pertains to on-site SEO:
1 – Screaming Frog
Screaming Frog is a desktop app that can quickly scan your entire website. It allows you to get a bird’s eye view of your architecture, metadata, 404s, and other metrics. The downside is that it is a desktop app, so multiple team members will require multiple licenses.
Having said that, Screaming Frog has been around a long time and is a phenomenal tool.
2 – Yoast
Yoast is a WordPress plug-in that can help you easily update your title tags and metadata. Yoast Premium includes an internal linking suggestion tool that can help improve your site’s internal linking and link flow. It also has settings to control what can be indexed or not and assist in equity leakage.
3 – SEMrush
SEMrush is a multi-faceted cloud-based tool. It not only does diagnostics, but also content evaluation and keyword research. It is a very robust platform with numerous benefits, not to mention its ability to measure the success of a campaign in general through analytics and keyword tracking.
4 – SiteBulb
SiteBulb has many capabilities similar to Screaming Frog, but it does have a visual representation of your architecture, accessibility, and your internal linking through crawl maps. I find this very helpful in trying to determine which pages should get the most emphasis and their relation to topical organization.
Last, but not least, Google’s free platform for webmasters has features to get your content crawled more quickly, as well as measure performance of search queries and notify you of any manual penalties/errors on your site. In most cases, I find that GSC doesn’t dive as deeply as other tools, but it’s still a necessary component of any serious search engine optimization specialist…and all sites should be submitted to Google Search Console.
